Best Digital Products to Sell: Choose the Format After the Problem

A practical guide to digital-product formats—templates, checklists, guides, courses, resource kits, memberships, and licensed content—and when each makes sense.

Last reviewed: September 14, 2026

The best digital product is not the format with the loudest income screenshot. It is the format that solves a valuable problem for an audience you can reach, with economics that support the amount of support and marketing the product requires.

Templates

Best when buyers repeatedly perform a task and benefit from a reusable starting point. Examples include planning documents, scripts, spreadsheets, design layouts, checklists, and operating templates.

Guides and playbooks

Best when the buyer needs a clear sequence, explanation, or decision framework. They work well when the outcome can be achieved without extensive coaching or software.

Courses and workshops

Best when the material benefits from demonstration, practice, sequencing, and multiple formats. Courses have higher production and support expectations, so use them when the problem genuinely needs depth.

Resource kits

Bundles of templates, examples, prompts, checklists, and reference materials can be strong when the buyer wants implementation assets rather than more theory.

Memberships

Best when the value is recurring: new resources, ongoing analysis, accountability, community, or updates. A static library alone may not justify recurring payment unless the library itself keeps expanding meaningfully.

Licensed or white-label products

Useful when you can legally customize an existing asset for a known audience. The quality of the business depends on the license, the underlying content, and how much value you add before sale.

How to choose

  • Start with a recurring or expensive audience problem.
  • Choose the smallest format that solves it well.
  • Check whether buyers already pay for alternatives.
  • Estimate support and update burden.
  • Confirm you have a realistic distribution channel.

If the main attraction is “I do not have to create anything,” the product is probably being chosen too early. Choose the problem first.
